after spending 3 hours loading this pile of crap I discover the computer freezes for 30 minutes everytime it runs the liveupdate. I was used to it slowing down a bit with 2006 but this is ridiculous. I think I may need to disable it and run it when i'm not actually wanting to use the computer
fucking heap of crap,.. stay well clear

I say to you FREE!!!! AVG

See my recent post in the Computer room ..... I use AVG (which is free, updates easily on a daily basis and has never let me down)

Try Norton 588 whistle: Goes like a rocket...
-
AVG hammers Norton/Symantec every time but if you are determined to fork out for an antivirus package then it would have to be Sophos.

Nothing but problems with that. I deinstalled it for AVG in the end.
-
When I was using sophos I had no problems with it, at least until the company license ran out and they swapped to Symantec Banghead

And do we all also use Lavasoft Ad-Aware spy ware?

I don't think I have any spyware installed. eeek:

No ~ cos it ain't a virus. Spyware is to stop people tracking what you do. Companies use it rather like Sainsbury and their cohorts use Nectar Cards.
Don't tell me ~ you thought Nectar was all about rewarding your loyalty and nothing whatever to do with sophisticated research into buying habits enabling targeting of offers etc.
Lavasoft (despite Berek's allegations) is very good and also free for home users. The only fault I have with it is that you have to (a) update it manually (ie you have to ask it to update as it doesn't do it automatically but it does issue the odd reminder AND (b) You have to instruct it to scan (it cannot be set up to do that automatically either)
The reservation above only apply to the free version. Pay for it and it comes with bells and whistles but how hard is it to scan once a week .... you can work whilst it goes on in the background. They recommend that you quarantine any "serious" threats in case you delete something you may want later but I gave up doing that and simply delete them anyway (as does everyone else I know who uses it)

Excellent! If it's free I will do it!

I use Nortons 2007 on my main PC at home, apart from taking a while to load it works OK. But when I loaded it on my other PC and it stuck when it tried to run liveupdate. Despite reinstalling a number of times and using a tool (http://service1.symantec.com/Support/nip.nsf/docid/2007052302121936?OpenDocument&lg=en&ct=us&seg=hho&src=hot) downloaded from Symantec designed to cure the problem no luck. It just wouldn't run liveupdates correctly and if I tried stopping it Nortons insisted that I had to wait for liveupdate to finish first.
In the end I removed Nortons completely surrender:
...and downloaded AVG happy088

What's in a name ~~~ As someone once said (almost)

Is spyware the same as adware?
no
Spyware steals things like bank details
Adware takes over on the interweb, redirecting to it's own sites.

I can attest to that; their reliability can be disappointing. I have a couple and neither have ever gone down on me eyes:

Speaking of which . . . . .
The statement at the top of each thread, you know, the bit after the pages, that says "GO DOWN" - is that an offer or a command?
