Title: Laptop advice
Post by: Nick on July 02, 2010, 12:00:13 PM
My old laptop is on its last legs and it's time to replace it. I need one that does the basics: intermong, Microsoft Office and that's about it. Nothing too small and fiddly as the keyboard will be too cramped. Any suggestions?

And the bit I hate is getting all my stuff off the current laptop to the new one. Do I recall there being some kind of cable that does this?  rubschin:

As you would say: "Get a man in"

On your main question, I have a Toshiba that has gone on for years with no problem, but i expect there are much 'cooler' brands these days.

BMs recommendation is OK BUT battery life is important and many lap-tops are good for only about 3 hours between recharges.
I got SWWLTBO one of these and the advertised battery life turned out to be an accurate 8 hours + so it will give her a day's work without needing to plug in the charger ~ very handy as she teaches "in the community" and there is not always a convenient socket.

http://www.johnlewis.com/230720588/Product.aspx

I admit hers came from Currys but this is the only pic I can find.

PS The Butterfly has a hoooooooge hard drive and mahoosive memory

If you move everything across chances are you will slow the new lap top down to almost as slow as the old one. Throw out the crap and save all else to a portable hard drive so you can access it when you need it but it won't be cluttering up your new machine.  angel1

Title: Re: Laptop advice
Post by: tel on July 02, 2010, 03:06:38 PM
USB cable is cheapest option for connecting - I use a mini gigabit switch and RJ45 cable, but then I'm awkward.

PCMover (£30 at Amazon including cable) is fine but expensive as a one-off - I read a review a few months ago and it is a one-off, they said that you cannot use a second time.

Email - if Outlook the just copy .PST file(s) over.

I personally would copy all the data to a removable drive and install software as and when needed.

I tend to do things the manual and long winded way, ticking the boxes as I go.

All of these thing werk, it's just that sometimes I like to be in control especially if I have not used something in anger.

The Windows file and docs transfer utility was a bit quirky to start with (seems OK now) and so I always had a copy of data on a different device.

As long as you have the old machine and it still is working, then there is no real risk, only wasted time and effort.
Helps to have patience - must be all the fishing I did (untangling knots etc).

I did mention the file and docs transfer - try it for data and settings, software will have to be installed piece by piece - at least then you have the option of junking stuff. The Mover software is never going to be a 100%, don't think anyone would be mad enough to give that assurance.

Windows Mail replaces Outlook Express, but I use Outlook.

As for Office, that's standard practice these days. prolly other stuff as well.

Dongle was a device originally plugged into a machine (started with mini-computers, PCs came later) that software checked before being allowed to run, a security key that you paid for as part of the licence - god help you if you broke/lost the dongle, software wouldn't run and supplier had you over a barrel money-wise.

Off topic I know, and useless as well.

I'll send you one and we'll see. I'll put the time I send it in the email.
