SWWLTBO has a student who suffers arthritis and has this bit of kit. She has had problems with "training it" to understand her and required a great deal of help to set it up. It still gets confused by her accent from time to time. Such things are fine for the handicapped (for whom it is intended) but it does seem to take some time to get it right for you. Not just plug in and go I'm afraid.

That said Stephen Hawking manages to use it.

You realise of course that Stephen Hawking doesn't use voice recognition software but rather text-to-speech voice output software.

Yes

This is bloody awesome!

As you use it more and more it understands more precisely what you say…  If it makes a mistake, you tell it to change it and it offers a range of alternatives.  If none of suitable you can spell the word you need.

I have taught it a range of swear words which will obviously come in most useful!

Well no, not in my experience...

It worked immediately without training...

To train it you simply read a section of text that it offers...

To correct, you simply say correct 'word' and it offers you a range of alternatives - you select the one you want by saying the number and then say 'okay'... if it doesn't offer the word you need you can say 'spell' and simply spell out the word...

It is very clever and intuitive... You simply say the punctuation that you need (comma, full stop, exclamation mark, ellipses, etc.) and format with 'new paragraph' and stuff...

It opens applications by simply saying 'open word pad' and you switch it off by saying 'stop listening'!  lol:

Well it may be that she is 83 years of age and speaks with a strong Welsh accent ~ neither of which apply in your case ~ however this is non-tech Nick we are talking about and we all know he doesn't share your incredible technical skills ..... he can probably fall off ladders though.

All I know is the old duck needed a couple of tutorials to be able to operate her particular voice recognition system and I have no idea what software she was using.

I had to source some "speech recognition/talking software" for a partially sighted user, After a meeting with the user, some  software was recommended by the RNIB but they did not supply it. Helpful.

The software cost a fortune, a product called JAWS. It worked with Word and Excel.
Have you ever heard the contents of a cell in Excel spoken out loud (every bracket, symbol, number etc) - it was hysterical.

The last time I had anything to do with voice recognition software I'd given my dad a strategy game that used it as part of the control set up. I don't think it did regional accents, he told a unit to advance and it called in an air strike which killed his entire force. Then it tried to interpret the cursing that followed.  lol: lol:

I just called Sky to cancel my account...

They have a cool speech recognition system which asks your address, name and date of birth so you can confirm you are the account holder before they put you through...
