Title: 'Phone goosed.
Post by: GROWLER on July 13, 2010, 08:03:57 PM
As much as i luv me owld mobile teleohone, even I have to admit that it's seen better days, and it's started acting all peculiar like now too.
Virtually impossible to read owt through the highly scratched screen now, and it seems to have erased all of my pictures sad32:  even though it tells me that the phone's memory is full of them. Even the screen saver has vanished. confused:

So, advice please.
What am I going to get to replace old 'steamy'?

I'm with o2, and they sent me some fancy pants all singin' and dancin' touchy scrolly monster thing a few weeks ago, but I told them it was shite and sent it back (just found the instructions for it actually. redface:)

I want summat with nice big clear buttons, a camara, and p'raps a flip down front to stop me accidentaly ringing peoples sometimes when it presses aginst me leg whilst its in me pocket.

No fancy pants crap with loads of useless features that I'll never use, and it's got to be cheap, preferably no more than about 20 quid.
Got to be able to take me sim card too with no messin' about.

Well?

It's got blueteeth I notice, so it's not that old then?
You used it in the past then like?

Has it got a loudspeaker on it so when I'm driving I can switch it on to 'paws free'?
Would it take me sim card or would it have to be unlocked or whatever they call it?

Shame it's not red like, but s'pose I could paint it like? lol:

Ok. I've put it on charge overnight and I'll see how it performs in the morning. I can't remember tbh if it has "speaker phone" mode so we'll see.
You might be able to pick up a couple of Ruby Red front and back plates  eyes: from somewhere. Or you could of course slap some paint on it!

It's got the box it came in, the charger, spare silver fronts and backs, manual etc. The spot light has been useful for getting the key in the door on a dark night  eyes:

It's currently got a Virgin PAYG sim card which I'll take out and then you can buy what you want / need. Spose it'll work something like that. I've never actually done this before  confused:

Growler's got an 02 card so it may not work, if your phone was bought as a package from Virgin then it may be locked to them.

Virgin are pretty at unlocking their phones.
Currently have 2 phones with them and Mrs Tel uses one of theirs but is not on their network.

Good point Uncle but when I bought it it was on a T-Mobile contract. I had it unlocked and bought a PAYG Virgin card to keep it as a spare when I upgraded to a new Sony Ericsson.

Best deal for simcards is ASDA PAYG. 8p a minute calls and 4p for texts. They will go with that phone. Yours online within 48 hours max.
You can't buy them in an ASDA store. There is a postage charge of something like 49pence and the service is actually Vodaphone.

It came out in '04, I probably bought it '05 or '06 and used it for a couple of years, I guess. Value according to "Phones4Cash" is 2 quid  sad32:

I don't think you need to unlock it; I'll remove my sim card and I think all you need do is buy one and shove it in. Check with your local phone shop?

I can't just go out and buy some old random sim card and lob it in, as the one I've got is an o2 contract card with my dedicated 15 year old number on it that I cannot afford to lose, that's all. ::)

But you won't lose it or have anything to lose.

If when you put your sim card in it doesn't work then you simply need to unlock the phone. Shouldn't cost you more than a tenner.

No need to get a phone unlocked ~ ask your current service provider for the PAC (Port Authorisation Code) THE LAW SAYS THEY HAVE TO PROVIDE THIS and give that number to whoever you buy the SIM Card from. Takes between 24 and 48 hours and the old number will be transferred to your new phone.
http://www.asdamobile.com/help/keep_your_number.html

I did give you the link to do all this in my reply #19 in this thread together with the link to take you to the site where you will be able to arrange all the transfers/new sim card and payments at the CHEAPEST RATES in the UK.  Banghead

One of the reasons I bought it originally was to prevent the accidental call syndrome. I remember at least a couple of instances where I'd been called by a friend who'd sat on their phone triggering last number redial  ;D

Your address book may not be stored in the SIM card ~ you may have it elsewhere in your old phone. Mobile phones do have the facility to store stuff in two places

You have a point Snoops. I seem to recall when I upgraded to my new phone the yoof sales assistant Bluetoothed it across or something like that.

The other thing Growler is that I doubted it has "speakerphone" back on Page 1; I certainly never used it. I'm sure there's a Bluetooth headset accessory you can buy if you wanted.

Post by: Snoopy on July 24, 2010, 01:26:07 PM
Certainly my mobile gives me the option of where do I wish to save my address book and other stuff and a quick check reveals that the boys' phones both have the same facility. All are different makes and Minor's is at least 8 years old as it is my old one.

Growler, I'm sure if you keep your sim card in your old phone, you can transfer your phone memory to your sim card, you should then be able to put the sim card into your new phone, at least I could with an old NOKIA I had

Factory settings on flip phone normally mean if you get s phone call and open the flip it automatically accepts the call.

If you want to change this you have to go into your settings.

Yes is also sometimes the green phone call symbol

You can generally copy your address book to your SIM and then move the SIM to the new phone...

HOWEVER the SIM memory has less space for the names... so "The Ford Main Stealer" in your address book will prolly end up as "The Ford" in your SIM and hence on yer new phone like...

You'd be better off transferring yer old address book to a PC then from the PC to yer new mobby like....

Try putting the battery in a sealed plastic bag then put it in the freezer. On the advice of works IT geeks I once did it with a laptop battery and it appeared to increase the life of the battery. if you Google for advice it seems some sites say it works, and others say it's a load of bollocks  confused:

Well spotted MD, well spotted! happy088

Don't fret Pasty. I was deliberately running the battery down so I know how long a charge lasts, and it also tells me if the battery is in fact permanently goosed or not.
It was only temporary goosed today, not permanently, cus of the reasons stated.

I've un-goosed it now (fully charged), and am most pleased that a full charge appears to be lasting 5 days, which is good. cloud9:

In the meantime re your Blue Toothed thingy ~ is it compliant with the legal requirements for use when driving?

IIRC it's illegal to drive a car whilst wearing headphones.

So why is a Bluetooth headset allowed?

Has the law been changed?
Title: Re: 'Phone goosed.
Post by: Snoopy on July 29, 2010, 03:50:40 PM
I believe that the phone has to be "fixed" into a holder that is in turn screwed/bolted to the car and with separate loudspeaker and microphone also you must not need to touch the buttons to answer or dial a call which to my mind makes most "kits" illegal. That said nobody seems to give a stuff about people using their phones when driving until they have an accident and then the rozzers ask them to blow down their alcohol measuring thingy and if that fails to prove an offence they check the driver's mobby records to see if they have been making or receiving calls in the period leading up to the accident.
That said:
Fixed rather than hand held seems to be fairly elastic depending on the circumstances and the policeman's attitude.

Personally I switch my mobby to voicemail when driving. I feel it is safer.

That is the most common cause yes. I found (in the past) that the microphone is best placed in the headlining edging, somewhere over the driver's door and the speaker either on the dash or run through the car's stereo. This problem does not, of course, exist with the Bluetooth Earing.  whistle:

The experience was first gained with the incar two way radios we used in the security company I worked for and put to later use with hands free mobile kits before I decided that there was no longer anything so urgent that the caller couldn't leave a message and have me ring them back from my next stop.
