I understand it is very difficult to remain "detached". Good luck if you can do it but it is not something I would want to get involved with.

I have my reasons. We shall see how it goes.

Why prisoners in particular ? Could you not start off with something a little less daunting at first like hospital visiting and work your way up or down as appropriate ?

I figured it would have been something you have considered and not just a sudden whim.

In response to the OP ... I really can't comment other than to say that I know someone who did time for embezzling (sp?). If I'd had the inclination to visit I fear all I could have said would have been ...

FFS, you stupid fvcking moron! What on earth were you thinking? You have loads of business acumen, professional qualifications ... jealousy got the better of you didn't it?  Banghead Banghead

That's prolly not much help ...  Shrugs:

(as part of my new life) to become a Prison Visitor (http://www.naopv.com (http://www.naopv.com))

Does anyone here have any knowledge or experience of this?

An acquaintance of ours did prison visiting as a step on the road to becoming a magistrate.

He is not the kind of person with whom I like to spend too much time and his patronising attitude to the criminal classes will not have endeared him to them either.  noooo:

Thank goodness our Nick isn't like that. He will be like a breath of fresh manure to the prison system.
