Title: Power adaptor
Post by: Just One More on July 29, 2010, 06:03:20 PM
I have an external hard drive and need a replacement adaptor for it. I've managed to find a magnifying glass to read the text on it and the basic information is:

Input : 100-240V - 50-60Hz 0.5A Max
Output : 12V ---- 1.5A

Maplins had every one but the one I wanted  Banghead . I'm looking online, but some sites include comments about milliamps etc which confuses the hell out of me. Any of you technically minded bods care to offer some advice or point me to one online?

Any help is greatly appreciated

Yes I know that site is sold out but that type is your answer. I use a couple of them.

1A = 1,000 milliamps...

So you need a supply with an output of 12V DC at 1,500milliamps

So... find a supply with the right voltage (12), current (1.5A or 1,500mA) and the right polarity... the centre pin of the plug can be positive (+'ve) or negative (-'ve)...

OK?

1A = 1,000 milliamps...

I knew that.  cloud9:

I bet it is 1,000,000 microamps as well?

Yes... 1A = 1,000,000 ľA or micro Amps...

Or, to be accurate we should call it the Ampere...

These days I would probably look for a new storage device, as prices have dropped so much (and a lot of them don't need seperate power supplies). Some of the docking stations for SATA drives are good value and more versatile.

Maplin aren't that great for spares/prices and I've found that a few searches usually produce some good options.

Can't be that specific without knowing the make/model.
