Title: Puter Problems
Post by: Miss Demeanour on August 04, 2010, 09:18:39 AM
It's fecked again  Banghead

The Brat leaves it on at night and it must have started some automatic update thing.

Came down this morning and it says it is on Stage 3 of update - 0% complete and then shuts down itself.

And is on a continual loop doing that.

If you force a close down and enter in safe mode etc does the same thing.

Any wise words or not so helpful suggestions ?

Using the words (roughly) of someone else in here, either get a man in, or stop yer moaning and either put up or shut up. ::)

Without seeing it, then no helpful suggestions straight off, just don't say yes to any messages about restoring etc.

There was a security update last night, an unscheduled one so that's probably what you are picking.

Try powering up the lapdog with no internet connection.

If you are really desperate, PM me.

It doesn't offer me any helpful suggestions to restore or anything  sad24:

It's the PC not the laptop ?

But I might try and disconnect t'internet later and see if that helps

You need the IT hammer and safety boot kit, always werks for me.

Hard drives often respond to a swift crack with a screw-driver handle and come back to life, but that's another problem.

Disconnect PC from internet
Run disk cleanup software from accessories/system tools
Check installed programs for unwanted stuff
Run defrag from same place as cleanup

Only basic stuff but it may make a difference.
It's a start anyway.

I did a defrag a couple of days ago. cloud9:

See you lot, I'm not a complete and utter thicko dicko on I.T. matters. razz:

I'll try the other stuff as mentioned.

I keep coming across programme things you can purchase, claiming to 'speed up your sliuggish computer', but am very wary they may be a £30-40 rip off. rubschin:

And how is the puter?

Sometimes it's ok, then it'll have a fit, jam on a page, then take 45 seconds to move again.
Sometimes it just doesn't load at all, and I have to keep left clicking. crash:

I've done a 'disc clean up' and another defrag, but it's not made much difference in all honesty. ::)

I may now try one of these other programme things you mentioned.
Aren't their any free ones available straight off the net?

This thing is over 7 years old now, and I'm wondering if it's just a bit tired p'raps?
Title: Re: Puter Problems
Post by: tel on August 09, 2010, 04:58:54 PM
Probaly is tired and knackered. Could do wiv a rebuild.

I looked at a friends PC the other week and it was cheaper to buy a new one rather than go for any upgrades (the upgrades were very limited anyway cos of the age of the motherboard ie max 1Gb of RAM).

If it was me and I didn't need the all-singing hi-power games/work-station box I would go for a cheap PC (software is the expensive part).
I would even consider buying some of the stuff these people recycle (I have dealt with them before for power supply units) -

http://www.computer-reclaim.co.uk/

Cheap and cheerful, almost throwaway, but would do basic Internet and word-processing stuff etc.
And yes, I know that people might say it's a a gamble and that I would go for it cos of my background, but I had a friend who used to buy an old banger every year and bin it when the MOT ran out, similar sort of thing really. Did what was asked of it, no more, no less.

Whilst I'm working on a different OS and kit I'd say that advice is sound and true. I'd got to the same point earlier in the year where the old kit could really not be upgraded anymore. Mind you I'd run it for more than 7 years so it'd done a good tour of duty!
What I realised this time was that I didn't need the top-of-the-range any more (for example I don't edit films or produce massive heavy weight presentations) and that domestic kit is (now) totally serviceable for modest business use.

My suspicions confirmed.
Registry cleaning tool thing in here isn't  completing its scan.

Just re-sets most things to default I think.

Seems to be running slightly better.

I've used it and it's ok.

Worst part is where software detects nasties but can't always get rid of them completely and you have to use another bit of software.
I cleaned a PC a few months ago and had to use 3 different packages and run each one twice at 2-3 hours a time!

Get a new one you big rug!

Can't. I'm absolutely skint. Work is flat on its arse.

I do have a hammer however. eveilgrin:

An "IT" hammer though?

Used for smashing up concrete.
Will that suffice....and this screen has started jumping up while I'm typing again btw. Why's it doing that? confused:

Screen jumping - don't waht causes that, happens to me sometimes. Think it must be some accidental key combo that triggers some effect.
BMs fault.
