Knowing of where you speak I'd suggest various types of Euonymus. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Euonymus) They grow well in pots and there are many different leaf shades depending on the species, all evergreen. And maybe some bamboo for screening.  Flowers I know little of, perhaps someone else could advise.

Concrete or tarmac are the ONLY options for you. I've witnessed your gardening 'skills' at Nick Towers#2 or is it #3?.

Amazon jungle springs to mind.

rubschin: mmmmmmm,on reflection, that could be an idea and THE interesting new adventure park of Nottingham.

#1 has a nice garden. #2 has no garden. #3 has a lawn. #4 has a large area of decking - hence the pots!

Have a look at neighbouring houses and streets and see what grows well. Rather than pay garden centre prices go to car boots and buy similar there. Better still, if there are lonely housewives/yummy mummies in the gardens engage in conversation  whistle: , and don't forget to take the cuttings afterwards
