Title: I'm going out to join a gym
Post by: GROWLER on September 07, 2010, 06:22:02 PM
I know, I know, I've bleated on in the past about them being a useless faddy waste of money, as MY gym is free and outdoors, quite 'illy and punishing.

However, I'm still a fat bastard (imo) and need to lose some weight, and 'ill walking doesn't seem to be having any positive effect on weight loss...at all. Banghead

I thought a bit of weight loss would also help take the strain of me legs too, enabling me to walk up me 'ills and things a bit quicker.

I have a plan for a new challenge next year, so NOW is the time to do something positive in preperation for 'Grueller 2011' eveilgrin:

Where do I go though? Shrugs:

Which one do I choose? Shrugs:

How much do they cost? Shrugs:

Will reception laugh at me and turn me away? Shrugs:

Costs of membership depends on facilities. In general terms you get what you pay for. For decent facilities with a swimming pool expect to pay between £800 and £1000 a year in your area. That should ensure that the staff are properly qualified to give advice and supervision to ensure you don't kill yourself. The local country club and gym in this village charges close to £1000 pa.
There are cheaper around but some are very risky. You could talk to your GP and if he/she agrees that it is necessary they can refer you to your local hospital physio for advice. Many hospitals have a supervised rehab gym for just that purpose. My local hosp certainly has.

PS For what it is worth the physio I saw recently pointed out that there is no point in exercising unless you also control what you eat so a diet is also necessary.

That Total Fitness center 'starts' FROM £275 p.a.

Terms and bloody conditions probably apply, and that's probably just the fee to get in the place.
Use of equipment extra no doubt. ::)

£800  - £1000 a year  eeek:

Mine costs £39 a month ( Fitness First)  - this includes full use of the gym  ( any of their gyms regardless of location) at any time, any or all classes you may or may not wish to attend, swimming pool , sauna, steam room etc  . I think the membership has gone up slightly now since I joined but shouldn't be by much.  You can  provisionally sign up for 3 months initially to see how you get on so you won't having to be signing your life away if you don't want to .

Some will also offer you a few free sessions with a personal trainer who can help devise a bit of a package for you tailored for your needs and what you want your outcome to be.

I guess there are the main chains ( Fitness First / Virgin Active / LA Fitness etc)  and then those specific to your area.

There may be special rates if you can use the gym on 'off - peak ' times which would make it a lot cheaper .

I remember saying I joined at the beginning of the year and you lot scoffing at me saying was a waste of time and money - but I love proving you wrong  whistle:

It will depend on your own motivation but once you start feeling your fitness levels improve that was motivation enough for me.

I am usually enrolled on a course which is usually Level 3 or above, purely because working part time while my kids were young I needed free entertainment.  I took a year off last year and also have no plans to enrole on anything this year.  Protean definitely applies to my career.

Have a good scout round first  and consider an introductory period before you sign up for good. Most gyms will offer you a free day pass / session so you can road test the facilities before signing any contract .

I know you dont like me adding to your threads but:

Body Mass Index

Your BMI result is: 29.60
You are in the overweight range.

Overview
Losing some weight will benefit your health and it is especially important that you don't gain any more. Being overweight is linked with type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, certain cancers and other types of illness.

If you are not physically active, regular exercise may help you lose weight and keep it off. It must be an activity you enjoy and can sustain for life. It is important to combine this with eating a healthy, well-balanced diet. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, choose lower fat foods and watch your portion sizes. Cut right back on foods and drinks containing a lot of sugar and/or fat. Try not to be tempted by losing weight fast; body fat can only be lost slowly (aim for about 0.5 kg (1 lb) per week).

Although BMI gives us some idea of the health risk associated with being a certain weight for your height, it's just an approximate means of assessing body fat and risk to health. It doesnt allow for weight from muscle - for example if you're an athlete or very muscular you will have a high BMI even if you have a healthy level of body fat. It's also not accurate for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding, the very young or very old, the extremes of the normal range of shape, nor does it allow for medical conditions which affect height or shape.

£800  - £1000 a year  eeek:

In an area such as the one you live in Miss D the competition decides the price. In an area such as where I live or where Growler lives local gyms are few and far between and this is reflected in the prices they charge. One also has to balance facilities on offer with travel costs etc. Growler would find lower prices and more choice were he to wish to travel into Liverpool. My estimates on costs are, as subsequent posts confirm, not so far out but then they were based on local enquiries undertaken very recently.

It is also worthy of note that the last gym I belonged to ... 12 years ago, pre heart bypass, cost £750 pa per person for a group membership deal of 12 people from the office I worked out of in Holborn ..... again supply and demand. I now use NHS facilities and they are free ...... as they would be to anyone undergoing cardiac rehab but perhaps not everyone is that "lucky"

Cycle?
Yes. I do do a bit of that, but prefer walking tbh, and some of the places I like going, it's either not allowed or just too extreme.

For what it's worth.

I (we) joined gym 4 years ago after heart attack.
Went to local (council) leisure centre and checked prices (main reason for this option was that they had someone there who was a member of the British cardiac rehab Team)
For 2 of us going 3 times a week it worked out that monthly membership was the best (no joining fee, advance fees etc)
For 1 person it would have been better to have taken the PAYG option - this however does mean queuing for entrance.

Membership gives access to all facilities in all 4 centres in the borough.
Private gyms locally are just that - a gym - leisure centre has pool, squash/badmington courts etc.
Also a cafe/bar for those (Miss D?) that succumb after a session.

The two private ones I visited last night both had pools, and very nice they looked too.

Couldn't believe just how disinterested and bored the girl was at the first one, so that actually put me right off. eeek:
Bit dingey (sp) in there anyway. Looks like they needed some proper bulbs tbh. ;)

I was told at rehab and afterwards that BMI was being dropped as being far too inaccurate. My BMI was 27 which I thought was high but was told to ignore it as my weight and height ratio were fine.
The waist/hips comparison is now being used and produces vastly different results.

Again as fat weighs less than muscle exercise will make your BMI look worse!

Try and join somewhere where the trainers/staff listen to what you are saying and what your target(s) are, and set up a suitable program - you will probably start off doing a lot less than you think you are capable of - they want to train you in the system first.

With so many exceptions it seems a totally meaningless measure. I think I'll stop worrying.

Uncle ~ I gave up worrying about weight some time ago ~ when a stick-thin child like waif who announced herself as the hospital's "Senior Nutritionist" advised me not to eat more than one piece of fruit at a time. I asked "Do I look like the sort of Gibbon that would eat two bananas in stereo?"
She said "I am being serious .... with diabetes you have to be aware of the sugar content of fruit"
Me "And who eats a single strawberry?"
She "You aren't taking this seriously"
Me "Are you?"
She "What do you mean?"
Me "You started this conversation by telling me to only have two Weetabix for breakfast and to use a sugar substitute on them, I told you that I don't eat Weetabix or any other breakfast cereal because of their sugar and salt content, that I never add sugar to anything and I don't normally have milk. I went on to tell you that my breakfast might be a boiled, poached or scrambled egg with a slice of toasted home-made bread followed by an apple or a banana..... and that is when you started on about never eating more than one piece of fruit at a time"

We agreed to differ eveilgrin:

Private gyms locally are just that - a gym - leisure centre has pool, squash/badmington courts etc.
Also a cafe/bar for those (Miss D?) that succumb after a session.

Mine has nice pool ...but it is one of the Black label clubs  Shrugs: ...meaning it has more facilities than others I think. You have a lounge area with free drinks ( non alcholic - more is the pity) , papers etc.

No cakes tho  sad24:

Mrs Tel found that there was some weight loss, but it was mainly a change in her figure that she noticed, ie toned up.
Clothes fit differently etc.

For 'odd ball' you could read eccentric, eccentric is good, as is 'odd ball' for that matter.

Bear listen up . Your problem is one of simple mathematics .

I suspect you're taking in some 6000 cals a day Shrugs: you need about 1500 to sustain normal health . That leaves 4500 cals to either be burnt or stored as fat . Your hill walking is good cardiovascular excerise and will  burn cals but any amount of excercise that a "mature" man can safely do will not burn 4500 cals a day (the fact that you are not losing weight proves that ). I dont want to teach you to suck eggs but" unused" cals are simply converted and stored as fat .

Limit your food intake to what you can burn and your overweight problem will be solved. No need for expensive clubs . You are just consuming more than your body can burn ..... simple as that .

Checked in at 11:00am as requested and had a brief chat with one of the staff and a quick tour, then very much left to my own devices  rubschin:. I can have the 3 visits and use any of the facilities; the only condition being that it's 3 consecutive days, so tomorrow and Wednesday it will be.

It's all very much underground (MissD will probably know) so very little natural light apart from the Boxing pod  eeek:, which is about the size of two telephone boxes and rises above ground level  rubschin:

As there was only about half a dozen people in it was thankfully free of the strutting, preening and checking-you-out types that I remember from gyms a few years ago. I did my own thing very much and made use of the studio (empty) with hand weights, the running machine, the swimming pool and the steam room. I'd forgotten to take my own padlock but the kindly receptionist looked after my stuff which was appreciated.

I imagine it gets packed at peak times because of its location and have yet to be given the full membership run down costs; I'll need that falling flat on my face emoticon when I hear it all on Wednesday probably.  scared2:

All in all a good couple of hours plus, and that good feeling of being moderately 'worked out', cleansed, steamed and relaxed  cloud9:

Well, they wouldn't; you'll go into the changing room, put your kit in a locker and realise that you need a padlock to secure it. You then go back out to Reception and say "Can I borrow a padlock?" and they'll say they're sorry, but they can sell you one.
Well that's the routine down here  evil:

Padlocks are for members only  lol:

We have swipey cards things .

Sounds like you had a good session then. But yes most in that area will be in basements with little natural lighting. I can use any Fitness First and there are a couple around there but to be honest it's not worth it - they are so busy at peak times ( mornings , lunch times and evenings ) that they give you a time limit on the machines - 15mins on the treadmill only for example  evil:

Day 2 in the subterranean meat locker. My oriental calisthenics attracted some interest today as I went through various routines with additional hand weights; a Taekwondo guy thought I was doing Wing Chung so I corrected him and the Aussie receptionist thought it looked magic ... didn't feel like it as I was sweating like the proverbial porker!

I added a 20 min session whacking the hell out of the punch bag in the Box-a-pod ... that felt good  razz:

Rounded off with a swim and steam before the gaggle of harridans started their manic punchathon-beat-scream-push-sweat thing in the studio. It really is so unnecessary  noooo:

The amiable Ally ran the costs past me and the best they can do is a 50 quid monthly on a 3 month contract; I don't think it's for me as mostly, apart from the swim and steam, I can do out in the park.  rubschin:
