I recall these from my youth. 50 years ago noooo: They would come round and take stuff away, either for cash or as recycling. They are back. There is aFord Transit driving past here most days with a guy shouting out of the window for scrap and stuff. A sign of the times?

Is he shouting "Raaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaag Nbonnnnnnnnnnnah" lol:

Ours rings a handbell ~ traditional like.

Round here, they just grab anything that isn't nailed down.
Metal stuff, is just left outside and someone will have taken it within a couple of hours.

They still come over Snoopy. Was a bit on them in a recent "Coast" programme, and on a slow-news day they'll sometimes run a piece on them
-
Well they don't get as far as North Wales.
BUT it is nice to know the old Bretons still find it worthwhile to make the trip.

I used to see one in Pimlico. Bike, beret, onions.
And a van parked round the corner noooo:

They used to come into Southampton/Portsmouth on the ferries with a large farm truck load. Maybe half a dozen at a time. The truck was filled with onions, bikes and Frenchmen and off they would go each morning until they had sold the truckload then back to France.
In the 50s they used this sort of vehicle
