Title: Hunting
Post by: Miss Demeanour on October 26, 2010, 10:34:50 AM
Now I know some people really enjoy the social, cultural and legal opportunity to shoot living things; and the argument about hunting is an old and controversial subject, but it just makes me incredibly sad that greed and ego drives us to destroy things that do not pose a danger to us or our livelihoods, or is not used for food.

The giant red stag thought to be Britain's biggest wild animal was killed for its antlers, according to reports on Tuesday.
The body of the "Exmoor Emperor," named after the southwestern area where the stag was frequently sighted, was found close to a road in the county of Devon.
It is believed that a licensed hunter is responsible for legally killing the stag, which stood nine feet (2.75 metres) to the tips of its antlers.
An industry source claimed hunters would have paid up to 10,000 pounds (15,800 dollars, 11,300 euros) to the landowner for the opportunity to shoot the creature.

No problem with shooting deer (I like eating it) but I do think that as with fishing there should be a closed season (during the time when the hunted are mating) when the hunters cannot catch or kill.

But to just shoot this animal, take it's antlers and leave it at the side of the road is so mindless ..IMHO

I couldn't agree more.

Killing to eat is one thing ..... Killing for pleasure should be reserved for vermin.

I have no time for 'sport' hunting as an activity, it is however an important rural business which I am bound to encourage.

On a purely management tack, a stag as big and old and dominant as that one really should be taken out of the breeding cycle as there will be far too many in the herd sired by him, rather like Rod Stewart.

Yes but in the rutting season? ~ Not sporting, makes it too easy. They should at least have let him get his leg over a few more times and shot him later in the year.
