It's not a pretty sight and the reactor is apparently very hot.  A nice bit of global warming going on in a very small place.

Indeed but the Japanese economy is much stronger than Haiti and corruption is not nearly so much of a problem.  It's still going to be tough going for them though.

I watched some footage this afternoon - mesmerizing in many respects how pitiful we look against the forces of nature. Utterly terrifying and tragic though for those that are in it  noooo:

I was doing paperwork from just after 0500hr's with Skynews on in the background when the first reports were coming in a little later and I saw some of the early footage. I've been in meetings all day and wasn't aware of just how much worse it got. As Miss D said, the footage was mesmerizing, and it was hard to comprehend that in all that debris, vehicles, and building I was watching were many bodies, truly tragic

Normally I'd be watching rugby on TV at this time on a Saturday morning. The extraordinary footage and latest news coming through from Japan is so sad, and with two nuclear power stations affected and the possibility of one of them going into meltdown, along with aftershocks of up to 6.8 this could get so much worse. Poor sods

I know I was just watching some footage and the TV bint was asking some 'expert' could there be anything more done to design buildings to prevent them from collapse in the event of a tsunami  Banghead Banghead Banghead

I really do hate some of these after event questions - futile  noooo:

The nuclear reactor thing though is a hoooge concern  scared2:

Why is it so important for sooooooooo many  reporters and 'correspondents' to actually travel out to Japan , to stand as close as possible to a failing nuclear reactor or on top of a car, which is on top of a roof which is at the top of a valley   noooo:

They seem to have armies of them they send to report the same thing from different locations  noooo:

I quite agree Miss D. They were filming, and one Japanese bloke "politely said he objected to us filming the destruction of his country", so out of decency, they should have stopped, and at least not shown that footage. But they shown it, and him

A few before after shots here  (http://www.abc.net.au/news/events/japan-quake-2011/beforeafter.htm) , just drag your mouse across right to left
