It was an economic decision BM, the base of the tower and engine house had to be made of granite because of the strength needed but it was too expensive and time consuming to use the stone for the entire chimney stack. When you take into account how easy it was to make bricks back then compared to shaping granite into a usable form for construction the choice was an easy one for the mine owners to make.
