There is also a rumour that if you take your dodgy Xbox online THEY can tell and before you can finish your first online gane THEY are knocking on your door ready to drag you out into the street and kill you.
Its feasible that Microsoft would be able to tell as they already have software capable (at least in theory) of telling a dodgy copy of windows from a genuine one. Having said that, there is a huge part of the hacking community that go out of their way to work out how to crack anything they can produce.
It's interesting to note that M$ claimed that high prices were caused by pirated software, now that they have - allegedly - sorted the pirateware with WGA They up the price by another 40%.
No wonder people try to bypass it all, It's nothing more than corporate greed - and it's spreading.
