Did anybody see the excellent programme on BBC2 last night?
It was the first one I’d seen of the series - Richard Symons wondered what UK democracy would be like if it were a crime for a politician to lie.
I hadn’t really thought about it before but while it is a crime for just about everybody else in the country to lie (think advertisers, estate agents, company directors, etc.) there is no law against politicians telling lies.
The presenter of the show interviewed a whole load of politicians who all agreed that they were the representatives of the people – even the employees of the people yet none of them thought it was a good idea to have a law to control them if they chose to abuse their power.
Excellent viewing – you can watch it
