So why aren't the rich spending?
« on: November 07, 2008, 09:56:53 AM »
So, working amongst the car sales industry I see every day now just how bad all this shite is affecting the ordinary man and woman, worrying about their future employment, and thus hanging on to what they've got.
Their IS money out there, but we're all hanging on to it in a terrified manner. scared2:
Why though is the top end of the market seemingly suffering so badly?
Seems to me that the more you've got, the more you're hanging onto your millions? Most peculiar. confused:

To drag this thread up again following no comments or input from anyone, I'd like to add that todays figures from the SMMT are showing further and a continuing downward slide in new car sales...apparently.
This however is contradictory to what I'm hearing at the stealers I visit every day.
Generally speaking, yes, things are down a bit, but most are reporting a fairly good Decemeber, and a particulary good post crimbo sales pattern.
They like most consider the bloody press is whipping up hysteria with dramatic headlines to sell more papers which in turn is scaring the public in general.
Why don't they simply STF up, and let things 'pan out' and run the course?

Serious head on for a moment ~ I think that the problem is not that the ordinary people are not buying things that they either want or need. In the car industry much is made, at a manufacturing level, of the fleet sales that account for a huge part of their output. Certainly, in my experience, when companies are guarding their pennies (and they are doing that) the first thing that happens is that all drivers of fleet vehicles are told they must wait for another year before they get their expected replacement. I've seen this happen several times over the years. The knock on is that the manufacturers start talking of a drop in sales, the main dealers don't feel this as the major manufacturers supply all big fleet buyers direct.
The next thing is that companies start laying off the sales force. Always the easiest and most cost effective staff disposal ~ although they forget that until somebody sells it nothing moves. Again this effects the fleet car market.

Good points raised there Snoops. Not dealing with the fleet industry, I hadn't really thought about it tbh, but I can see what you say makes mucho sense.
Good to see the public are still actively purchasing though.

I still think the press has a great deal to answer for.
Totally irresponsible behaviour from them imo. Nowt new there though ey? ::)

True about the press ~ there is no story in "Good News".

Can you imagine the drop in sales if the Daily Mail carried a headline that said
"ALL IS WELL WITH  THE WORLD ~ EVERYONE IS HAPPY"

Sales would go up by at least one. ;)
