A thought on the economy
« on: January 22, 2009, 11:28:35 AM »
This occured to me last night. I may be over simplifying things here but instead of ploughing billions into the banks to kick start the economy then looking like a fool because they still wont lend anything, wouldnt it be easier and cheaper to give £1000 to each household? It wouldnt matter if people invested it, saved it or spent it, the cash would then be in the system and with the government making VAT on some of the purchases they automatically get some of it back straight away.
The universe is run by the complex interweaving of three elements. Energy, matter, and enlightened self-interest.

That is pretty much what the Yanks tried and it didn't really work for them.
Personally I am of the school that says the less the Government interferes the sooner the whole damned mess will sort itself out. Yes badly run companies and banks will go to the wall but the strong will survive. Dead wood in boardrooms will be thrown out and only those who can achieve will be left. It won't be pleasant but I really feel that the recession will be prolonged by Government fiddling around and that the country will be paying for it for generations whereas by letting the market sort itself (with appropriate regulations and laws to prevent such things as contracts that pay out millions to failures) it will be a short, sharp lesson that will not be easily forgotten.

Guy on the radio advocating just this yesterday ~ he was right when he said that for the past twenty plus years we have lived off of North Sea Oil as the UK has been a net exporter of oil but within ten years we will be back to being a net importer and our earnings as the world financial centre, a position which is now well and truly fvcked.

We have to find a new place for ourselves in the global economy and the way Gordon is going about things that new place will be sitting outside the World Bank with a begging bowl and a sign that says "Winners of 2 World Wars and 1 World Cup ~ please spare some change".

FFS look what we have given the world in the past ~ it can't all have been for nothing but the way this lot have messed up our economy, spent all our assets and downgraded our education system I'm afraid it has been.
I used to have a handle on life but it broke.

Maybe our time has come and gone, from a Premier Division country to Sunday League? We are no longer a world power and we are still attempting to fight well above our weight, maybe we should adopt a role similar to that of the Holland, Belgium or Norway, and let the big boys get on running the world. rubschin:
