The proper etiquette

Does anyone know what the proper etiquette for poking the neighbors small screaming banshee in the eye is?

Should I  1.  Ask permission politely and carry on regardless of the answer?
             2.  Ask permission and respect the answer?
             3.  Other?

No dear ~ That's ants you're thinking of.

It's cold water for cats and children ~ a "Whoops, SORRY!" moment with the garden hose usually works I find.

I was killing garden ants when I heard a terrifying scream that made me jump and pour boiling hot water all over your child / cat / husband ( delete as appropriate)  whistle:
