Pandas should die
« on: September 23, 2009, 07:16:51 AM »

Giant pandas cost too much to protect and should be allowed to become extinct,  Chris Packham has declared.

The wildlife expert thinks the millions of pounds spent on trying to save the species could be better spent on other environmental projects..he argues the money should be invested in the conservation of environments

"It's time to give up on the cute and cuddly because we just can't afford it and we need to think of a much bigger picture," he says

It is estimated that there are only around 1,600 of the black and white bears left in China, with nearly 200 more being bred in captivity.

The animals have become critically endangered as a result of their natural habitat being destroyed and also their reluctance to breed in the wild.

Mr Packham says ongoing breeding programmes are pointless if there will not be any suitable land left to release them on to.

He is recommending the species is left alone to die out naturally.

So apart from being cute what would be the benefits be of spending fortunes to keep this species alive  rubschin:

I agree with him...

Ultimately all these ventures (see also gorillas, elephants, etc.) are doomed to failure.

We have to decide between people and animals, there isn't enough land to continue to grow the population as fast as we are... personally I'd restrict the number of people...   lol:

And if the bloody pandas can't be bothered even to shag each other what really is the point?

Apparently some pig ugly species of dolphin became extinct last year but because it was not 'cute' or associated with any particular country then no effort was taken to try and save the species.

Chris Packham on pandas : "It's not a strong species ...... I reckon we should pull the plug. Let them go with a degree of dignity."

He condemned the ursine freeloaders as "T-shirt animals" saying "Here's a species that, of its own accord, has gone down an evolutionary cul-de-sac. It's not a strong species. Unfortunately, pandas are big and cute and a symbol of the World Wildlife Fund."

Warming to his theme, Packham said we could take a similar attitude to other species - with civil servants top of his list.

"Go into the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs with a flamethrower and torch all of the stupid bureaucracy that dogs our farmers," he ranted. "Let's start organising fair pricing for UK farmers."

Are Pandas edible?

There would be a certain evil pleasure in sitting round a fire of rainforest logs cooking the last Panda.
