Email speak
« on: November 05, 2009, 05:41:18 PM »
Earlier today I sent a comprehensive email to a colleague including text from referenced papers published in venerated journals on 't'other side of the pond detailing medical tests, the elderly, benefits of exercise etc etc. All in all a thorough and informative missive which I thought the recipient might be grateful to receive...

Indeed he was; I got an email back later which consisted of four letters:

tnks

Now I happen to know the guy and this is par for the course; but it begs the question, what do you infer from the response you get from emails?

I guess at least he expressed some form of appreciation ....though what additional effort it would have cost to add an extra couple of letters who knows  noooo:

I used to despise 'Kind Regards' - but that was because one person who I dislike with a passion used to sign off with that disingenuous remark all the feckin time. I am gradually getting over that now   redface:

Well if that was the response I got it would be the last time I sent that person anything.  evil:

I am guilty of hating texting (mainly because it takes too long and I find it quicker to phone and speak). I am happy to email but most of my emails tend to be in letter format starting "Dear XXXX," and ending "Yours sincerely"

The reason my texts take too long is that they are like my emails. redface:

I've known this guy for years; he's Glaswegian and I've long suspected that he considers every typed character costs money  lol:.
Hell, he'd charge his mobile at McD's if he could find a table near a socket  eeek:

Snoopy, having known the guy for years I take this on board; it's his style. The question remains what can one infer from the style of response ?

I would infer that he likes to give the impression of being a Hip, Finger Snapping, Busy, Busy, Busy, Guy ~ a Mover and Shaker.

Not knowing him I can only say that, to me, he comes over as sooooooooooooo far up his own arse as to be in need of a strong and reliable torch. I am probably very wrong but first impressions count and I have no other to guide me.

The truth is he is probably afraid of the technology.

All that said the less some people say the more room there is for those of us with verbal diarrhoea.  redface:

I have found that people that reply in such a manner are either 12 or have an over inflated sense of their own importance. I'm so busy I can't even write a one line email.  ::) Please give me a break.

I would infer that he he wasn't that interested in the contents of your e-mail. Sort of 'tnks but no tnks'

A more normal reply would be 'CU JMY'

In fairness (since I see the chap on a pretty regular basis), he normally kicks off the conversation with a comment about a rare Malt he's recently sampled  ;)
