So the Yorkshire Ripper wants out eh !

The judge was swift to lift the cloak of anonymity from Peter Sutcliffe yesterday, as the multiple killer applied for a ruling on when he might be considered for parole.

But the case is prompting concerns that if Sutcliffe is granted a minimum jail term or tariff that would expire in the near future, he will apply not only for parole but also for a rare lifelong anonymity order.

Already the Yorkshire Ripper is using the name Peter Coonan. In October a judge directed that in court he should be called Sutcliffe, so as to ?preserve the confidentiality of his new identity?. Yesterday the media, led by The Times, argued successfully that the alias of Coonan was in the public domain and could be mentioned.

Lifelong anonymity would give him an entirely new identity again, enabling him to live his life in the shadows, known only to the smallest handful of probation and police officers.

It would then be for his lawyers to seek the granting of a lifelong anonymity order from the High Court.

Only three have been granted in England and Wales: the first to Robert Thompson and Jon Venables, the killers of the toddler, James Bulger, in 2001. The second was to the child killer Mary Bell and her daughter in 2003 when her daughter was almost 18 and orders protecting their identities till that date were ending. The third was to Maxine Carr, former girlfriend of the Soham murderer Ian Huntley, in 2005.

Nor me. Judges make some strange decisions, but letting him out would be a bridge too far   noooo:

It shouldn't happen but as you say Judges do weird things.

Anyway it has given the Daily Mail something to chew on for a few days.

I say let him out to re-join the community in a fanfare of publicity.













It would save a fortune and I have always favoured the death penalty anyway.
