Helpful hint ~ as that toilet does not have an isolation valve then take the top off the cistern. Wedge the ballcock in the shut position and use the downstairs toilet until you can get it fixed.
I used to have a handle on life but it broke.

Right.l I have put back the old faulty ballcock which seems to have healed up and werks perfick like  rubschin:

The new one lies before me in about 30 pieces  noooo:

I may quietly insert it in the bin
