A memo
« on: July 27, 2010, 01:39:17 PM »
Sorting though some of my very old files I came across this memo.

I am sorry to have to this, but some of you are having far too many private telephone call and these must be drastically reduced forthwith and limited to short essential calls only. I am afraid this must apply to inward calls as well as out-going. In both cases, you are using lines which might be required for our business.

Apart from the above, you may be required for the purpose for which are employed and our business cannot be carried on efficiently if those on long telephone calls are not available.

We look forward to you full co-operation in this matter.

It's to "The Ladies" and is dated 27th August 1969 (even before my time)

 eeek:

I wonder what reaction I'd get if it was sent today?

The first question is 'would it be sent today' or is it just accepted that employees have total overlap of private and working lives.

I think there would be anarchy if you could block phone calls as easily as you can Faceache/VP etc in the workplace.

I bet the memo was signed, 'Mr Cholmondley' with no job title because they all knew who he was, rather than 'Darren, Trainee Junior Assistant Manager of Memoranda, Human Resouces Division'

I mostly despair

At my last place of werk one of my mates was on a serious disciplinary for sending an offensive memo to a member of staff (she was some paranoid feminist). HIs defence was that ALL his memos were offensive, and he produced a mahoosive file of them to prove it. He kept his job.  razz:

You may not be able to block them but depending on the office phone system any outbound call can be recorded automatically. I know a few peiople who came a cropper because of that little innovation.
