The company I work for earns it's money on knowing where ships are, where they're going and what cargos they can carry. We pay thousands of pounds p.a. for their data. One of my first jobs when I started was to send on crew mail to where the ship was due next. We acted as agents for a couple of Japanese shipowners. No computers or e-mail, mainly corresponded by telex.
