The Things You Find in the Back of a Drawer
« on: September 09, 2011, 03:15:23 PM »
Having a bit of a clear out I decided to rake out everything in my desk and I found a PAGER  ::)

Motorola Minicall .... was the most advanced system of its time and pre-dates mobile phones. Messages could be dictated to a specified phone number via land line and within minutes the pager would bleep and one could read the message on the screen. About the size of a packet of three it was the most useful item I ever carried .... apart from a packet of three that is.

Now comes the kicker .... I put a battery in it (AAA) and bugger me it worked! eeek:
Must be twenty years since I last used it!

I called Motorola and "Goodness Gracious Me" answered.  ::)

He remembered when he was a toddler his uncle used to have one but tells me that they no longer support the system as "Cell Phones" have replaced the need.

Minor is fascinated by it and has taken it off to his room as a "Piece of History"

Kerist ..... I feel old!
I used to have a handle on life but it broke.

I'll get it back off the little bugger and see if I can get a connection via Vodafone then  eveilgrin:

Thanks DS .... the best thing about them was they reached the parts others couldn't!

Oh and they went into a pocket which was more than could be said about the "Mobile" phones that were the size and weight of a house brick back then.
I used to have a handle on life but it broke.

It is still going.

The vet has one because they work where mobile phones don't apparently.

We were still using them till September 2008 for that very reason. The current employer didn't see the need, and TBH, due to better coverage with aerial masts, we've not missed them

Like Snoopy I have one somewhere at the back of a drawer
