Wiki says:
Quote
The language of flowers, sometimes called floriography, was a Victorian-era means of communication in which various flowers and floral arrangements were used to send coded messages, allowing individuals to express feelings which otherwise could not be spoken. This language was most commonly communicated through Tussie-Mussies, an art which has a following today.

The nuances of the language are now mostly forgotten, but red roses still imply passionate, romantic love and pink roses a lesser affection; white roses suggest virtue and chastity and yellow roses still stand for friendship or devotion. Also commonly known meanings are sunflowers, which can indicate either haughtiness or respect – they were the favorite flower of St. Julie Billiart for this reason. Gerbera (daisy) means innocence or purity. The iris, being named for the messenger of the gods in Greek mythology, still represents the sending of a message. An Anemone signifies disappearance of hope. A pansy signifies thought, a daffodil regard, and a strand of ivy fidelity.

There are geographic variances. For example, in Texas yellow roses represent true and undying love

White roses =   Eternal love, silence or innocence, wistfulness, virtue, purity, secrecy, reverence and humility

Yellow roses = Friendship, jealousy, infidelity, or apology, a broken heart, intense emotion, dying love, extreme betrayal

Surely though any woman that receives flowers is not going to say take those back because they are the wrong colour  rubschin:

I mean, I know we have our preferred colours and also types of flowers but isn't this based on personal preference and the whole 'significance' of them is pretty much redundant.

There are of course obvious commercially exploited exceptions such as Valentines  noooo:

In Victorian times the "Language of Flowers" was a very tricky area but then the Victorians also covered the legs of their tables and pianos/

I think most laydees these days are just pleased to get flowers however my mother would not have certain flowers in the house and Woodstock dislikes Chrysanthemums .... she says they belong at funerals.

Mum's aversions seem to have some basis in logic, those she would not have indoors included Honeysuckle (which I now know many are allergic to) Lilac (drops pollen that stains carpets and furniture) & Laurel (Poisonous). Lilies were, to her, a sure sign of a death but also drop pollen (see lilac)
