Anyone got a good recommendation?

The sprogs have bank accounts now and I would like them to get used to recording and tracking their spending. I've used Quicken3 since 1995(!) and it's worked fine on every new version of Windows until I tried to load it on my Daughter's Win8 laptop. No go even under various compatibility modes

Most of the packages I've found are US orientated, even Quicken doesn't support the UK. I've tried a few free downloads: AceMoney Lite and Gnucash, even a spreadsheet template but all are 'clunky' and still US based.

A nice, simple UK accounts software, no bells or whistles, just a bank account, cash account and simple transaction lists. Is it too little to ask for?

No, nothing clever... just rows and columns....

County Court does it for me.  They don't write, I haven't overspent too much



Excel is good though  .  There's a reason Microsoft Money was retired as a product, too much bloody effort to get information to bore a nerd with

LloydsTSB advertise a Money Manager .... Dunno if it is limited to their own account holders tho'...... but it looks as if it would do exactly what you want.


I have two bits of freeware to use for invoices (Village Hall & Magazine). I use two so that there is no chance of cross-over mistakes between the two accounts. Both are US and needed a lot of changes and frankly I sometimes think I'd have had an easier time keeping the accounts if I had bought something rather than search out and fight with "Freeware".

When I switched from anna log accounts (diligently scripted in me own fair hand) to digi versions I looked around for off-the-shelf packages but they were all either too expensive, too complex, too American or just plain unintelligible for my simple  brain   needs.

I ended up building my own in Mac's Numbers (PC Excel). They do exactly what I want them to do, Bank Rec.s, VAT returns, Sales, Purchases, petty cash etc with formulae and all that. I ran a draft copy past the accountant at the time (had to save them as Excel versions for him) and he was more than happy. 

Try getting the sprogs to build their own?

I like Excel (other spreadsheets are available), you can do some very simple stuff with it to get up-and-running. But under the bonnet there are the most amazingly sophisticated tools and functions...

I remember running VisiCalc on an HP-85 with a teeny-tiny screen....
