Wasn't it Windows NT that used to take carefully thought out passwords and truncate them back to 6 bytes by just ExOring any further characters

I don't remember that.... 

I do remember that it came on an enourmous pile of 3½" 'disks when it came out...

...I remember it well because (unbeknown to me) the HP File Server I was trying to install it on had a hardware fault and the installation fell over after about disk 12.... again, and again and again.... 

That is a lot of disks and a lot of entering domain names, admin passwords, time zones, etc.
