Poverty and Crime
« on: May 29, 2022, 09:55:18 AM »
More from the tellybox (I must stop watching political programmes). Discussion of the link between poverty and crime. Even an interview with an ex shoplifter who maintains that he took to shoplifting because of poverty and having nothing.

Bollocks! He's a criminal and uses poverty as an excuse.

Personally I believe modern society engenders a sense of entitlement that means a person feels that if they have less than someone else they are can take what ever they wish.

I see your 'Bollocks' and raise you statistical proof of a link (not the only reason by any means but too strong to ignore)

https://www.trustforlondon.org.uk/data/crime-and-income-deprivation/

'Recorded crime in London is more prevalent in the neighbourhoods with the highest levels of income deprivation:

Overall, 80% more crimes were recorded in the most income-deprived areas;
Violence, robbery and sexual offences are 2.6 times more prevalent in the most income-deprived 10% of areas compared to the least income-deprived 10%; and
Drugs and weapons offences are 2.3 times more prevalent in the most income-deprived 10% of areas compared to the least income-deprived 10%. '
Well, whatever, nevermind

Yep, you got more than me so I'll take it.

Christ! I grew up in poverty, one of five children in a single parent family (Father died when I was six) We lived on charity and handouts but never turned to crime. We learnt a sense of right and wrong from our mother. Didn't turn to crime.

And most don't but there is an undeniable link and it's going to get worse if we don't wake up and smell the coffee.

The link is greed and jealousy, fueled by a sense of entitlement.

Or maybe you're wrong and it's far more complex than just a single cause
Well, whatever, nevermind

Uncle nails it...

We were extremely poor... Ice on the windows in winter (inside) of our council flat, Dad had to work six days a week (compulsory overtime on Saturday), Mum had multiple cleaning jobs to fit around school, Mum had to make our clothes, etc. Never turned to crime...

Well no apology from me for being able to understand that it's never as simple as one cause one effect
Well, whatever, nevermind

Correlation doesn't equal causation.... ::)

Perhaps the most 'income deprived' neighbourhoods are shitholes because of the people that live there, not because they are income deprived...?

I'm guessing that if we gave these people stacks of cash (which we do) they would still be shit holes with high crime...

Some of them would obviously

But then if you don't change things some of them are going to die and some of them are going to riot and possibly overthrow the state is we keep on with this lunacy of victim blaming
Well, whatever, nevermind

Well no apology from me for being able to understand that it's never as simple as one cause one effect

How about apologising for poor maths:

greed and jealousy, fueled by a sense of entitlement.

I make that three causes.

Anyway, I believe it comes down to a simple choice: "Do I do what is moral and right or not.
