Parliament's first archery tournament is taking place, with MPs and peers competing against each other and raising money for three charities.

The Lords team is captained by the Duke of Montrose, who is an officer in the Royal Company of Archers the Queen's Bodyguard in Scotland.

Banbury MP Tony Baldry is leading the side representing the House of Commons.

The contest is taking place at Armoury House in London's Finsbury Fields, home of the Honourable Artillery Company.

The Duke of Montrose said an ancestor of his - the first Marquess of Montrose - was "a well-known character" who "won the St Andrew Silver Arrow in 1630, accidentally putting an arrow through the dean's hat".

Robin Hood

Team-mate Lord Elton holds the title of Lord of the Manor of Adderbury, and said records showed that holders of that office 700 years ago had been "familiar with the longbow".

"It is appropriate that they should continue to be," he added.

Nottingham North MP Graham Allen joked that he was taking part as he was probably a descendent of legendary archer Robin Hood, having been born and brought up in the city closest to Sherwood Forest.

Money raised from the competition, plus a dinner and an auction, will be split three ways.

It will be shared between the Bowyers Charitable Fund, which gives money to children's charities; The Passage, a day-care centre for London's homeless people; and the archery section of the 2012 Paralympics.
The universe is run by the complex interweaving of three elements. Energy, matter, and enlightened self-interest.
