This cropped up in a meeting earlier

Quote
Philip Larkin - This Be The Verse
They fuck you up, your mum and dad.
They may not mean to, but they do.
They fill you with the faults they had
And add some extra, just for you.

But they were fucked up in their turn
By fools in old-style hats and coats,
Who half the time were soppy-stern
And half at one another's throats.

Man hands on misery to man.
It deepens like a coastal shelf.
Get out as early as you can,
And don't have any kids yourself.

Philip Larkin ~ A one trick pony. An overrated, opinionated, librarian who was also p*ss poor poet, so far up his own arse that cleaning his teeth must have been very difficult. Made his name when there was no-one better on the scene by setting out to "shock". That he was great friends with Kingsley Amis tells you all you need to know. Wrote poetry for the pretentious which is useful, however, to drop in a quote from if you are trying to impress people who don't know better. IMHO of course.

Personally I pefer John Betjeman or Wendy Cope for pleasurable reading.

As for the sentiments expressed in that piece of doggerel ~ it may have been his opinion but I have long suspected that it was deliberate attention seeking, written to be offensive.

No grudge ~ just don't like his stuff. As for the psychiatrist ..... that's modern education for you but to be fair you either like poetry or you don't. I only know what I like and now wish that I had paid more attention at school when I found it "boring" ...... but that applies to many things.

What time did I change the meds? .... 'bout three weeks ago. The improvement is marked but when you know you cannot get better (as in cannot ever fully recover) any improvement is welcome.

The medical profession do not believe in the holistic approach I have noticed. They can be very blinkered.

Larkin ~ I have a "collected works" paperback and I do like some of his pieces. I would certainly disagree with the "p*ss poor poet" description.

IMHO "Aubade" is one of the great poems of all time.
