What have this man's business affairs to do with it?
« on: August 07, 2008, 01:46:02 PM »
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/7546968.stm

So the guy owns a business and a "friend and business associate" serves him a court order for monies owed and puts the business into bankruptcy. Fair enough ~ sh*t happens. But the man is also a Football Referee, from which he earns money and no doubt has reassured his wife that whilst his business has collapsed (and many will in the current climate) at least they still have his FA earnings to keep them going whilst he sorts matters out. This is not good enough for the FA and they have pulled the plug on his job as a referee. I fail to see what his business affairs have to do with his ability to referee 22 people playing a game of football. I suppose the only consolation is that the "friend" who forced him out of business has even less chance of getting his money now.

Given that he has money troubles it's possible they may consider him more open to bribery or corruption.

rubschin: Once upon a time a bankrupt could not gain employment as a postman on that logic. I was one of the UCW team that argued that a bankrupt has no reason to steal as he owes nothing anymore. A man with a huge mortgage and credit card debts who has not been declared bankrupt however is far more likely to yield to temptation.

I'm not arguing but trying to see the reasoning by the FA.

Admittedly as a top referee one would assume he has developed and shown a strong sense of right and wrong.

I agree (and I didn't think you were arguing)

It just seems bloody odd that they act this way with this guy but fail to make any enquiries about what size mortgage and other debts any referee has. It almost suggests that someone is trying their hardest to kick him whilst he is down.
