It sounds like they may be making a film about old Baldy. There was something in the news earlier about Ewan McGregor and George Clooney making 'The Man Who Stares At Goats'  whistle:

That'd be nul points in the resemblance stakes then...  ;)

It got me thinking back to John Thaw playing the lead in A Year in Provence... I kept thinking he was going to turn detective  noooo:

Funny that ~ Some actors are forever cast in your mind as one type of character and yet others can play any part but one part can only be played by them. Take your example of John Thaw. I was happy with him in the Sweeney and as Morse but in AYiP, as you say, just not right. John Nettles as a copper yes ~ anything else No.
On the other hand Alec Guinness could play about anything (although they say his Hamlet was not good) but George Smiley could not now be played by anyone else in my opinion.

Very true. I guess it might depend on what you've been brought up on. For example when I was taken to see the first Bond film, Sean Connery was it... for ever. In spite of his talents I only have ever seen him playing Bond, playing another character.

Whereas Anthony Hopkins whom I saw in theatre before film roles was much more like a chameleon... and scary too.

Absolutely ~ I love Sean Connery playing a Russian Submarine Captain with a broad Scottish accent in The Hunt for Red October. I guess it's a case of Once Sean, never forgotten.  whistle:
