Also there is the war graves commission - I found my great uncle there, Holland 1944. This gives you a service number etc.

You can find war dead from WWII but not their service records without going via the MOD, who are very reluctant to reveal anything as next of kin etc may still be living. I have my father's WWII service record as I have his Pay book and discharge papers which he had kept and passed to me but the MOD will not release any other info to me unless I can demonstrate that I am his eldest surving son and that his wife is dead. I can do all these things obviously but they are still reluctant as they fear law suits if they give out information that is misused..
I used to have a handle on life but it broke.
