The End of the Year Thread
« on: December 22, 2008, 07:54:59 PM »
Somehow, some way we're going to have to put the lid on this past year. There's going to be no end of programmes trying to sum it all up in the next week or so, a lot of it froth and babble but hopefully some putting their finger right on the point.

I imagine most if not all of us have never known anything like it. I was imagining relating the events to my old man (RIP) the other day and all I saw was utter disbelief on his face. Total incredulity.
In the next few days I'm going to try and put a few words together for my own peace of mind if nothing else to cap off 2008; feel free to add your own. It might make interesting reading.

It has been a shite year in many ways. 2009 will be worse.

I have been watching Niall Ferguson's "The Ascent of Money" on Channel Four. Last night's was the last in the series (now to be shown on various other "Dave" related channels for evermore).
Very good programme and last night he drew all the strands together to show that we have been here before many times and that "they" (the politicos and the bankers) are all too young to remember the lessons from last time and the time before and will continue to make the same mistakes over and over in the coming decades.

The last "major" recession he claimed resulted in War (WWI) Revolution (Russian) and ultimately WWII  ~ the one before he pointed out had given us the French Revolution and the one before that had led to the English Civil War.

There were, he was at pains to point out, many smaller recessions in between (about once a decade) but all the really big ones had ended in much bloodshed. He points to China V USA as the potential war that will ultimately get the world economy going again but he went on to say that this time it may not be a killing war but a war of ideals and businesses.

I have no sympathy with Hamas, the death and injury of ordinary Palestinians is regrettable.

While I have no sympathy with Hamas either I cant help but wonder if the Iraelis just want to prolong the conflict. Their campaign wont stop the attacks, they'll just delay them while driving more people into the arms of Hamas.

You may be right but the Israeli theory is that they will eventually blast Hamas and any others into onlivion. They (Jews) feel that they have been pushed around for centuries and have now reached the point where they will be pushed no more so they get theirs in first.

You are right, a clear message to Hamas and any other group, Fcuk with us at your peril.

Having said that promotion prospects to senior level within Hamas are good but the health plan is crap
