Pathetically useless roolz
« on: November 16, 2009, 11:43:42 AM »
I have just been on line trying to buy the THW a "Young Persons Travel Card". For an annual fee of £26 she will get 1/3 off all rail fares (subject to Ts & Cs) and a variety of other discounts. This could be cheaper than me running her to and fro and since the cards are usable by "Young People" up to the age of 25 seems to me to be likely to get some use. Understandably they want a passport sized photo but then we come to the tricky question of proving her identity.
Her Student Union Card is not acceptable.
Her Cash Point Card is not acceptable.
Her Card for the College Library is not acceptable.
She has no "utility bills in her own name but anyway they would not be acceptable as they wouldn't show her age.

So what is acceptable? ~ A Passport or a Current UK Driving Licence ~ nothing else will do it according to the website.

Obviously at 16 she does not have a current UK driving licence and she doesn't have a passport. To buy her a passport would take weeks and cost £77.50 which I feel would negate any savings on rail travel for the next several years.

I have telephoned the "Help Desk"
"Surely not all sixteen year olds have their own passport ~ do they not tend to travel on Group Passports obtained for each trip by their school?"
"What about when she goes on holiday?"
"Last time I looked passports were not required to leave Wales or to go to Dorset on holiday with her family"
"Owh! Don't she go abroad then?"
"Only with the school, we haven't been abroad as a family since it became necessary for children to have their own passports ~ she used to travel on her Mother's passport"
"Owh! I fought everyone went abroad on holiday"
"Not when you live on a pension and have three children to pay for you don't"
"Owh! ~ Well I s'pose if she took her berf certificate to the nearest station she could buy the card there"
"But our nearest station is unmanned, as are the next 4 along the line."
"Owh! Well that's all she can do"

NOOOOOOOOOOooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

The Rail Card was meant to be a little surprise from me to help with her budgeting, also to show her that she is gaining more independence and doesn't need Daddy to be running her everywhere.

She has been dropping king sized hints about getting one for weeks but apparently doesn't want to spend her own money .... I thought she might be pleased  sad24:

I did slip her the fare when she went to Chester on Saturday ~ after her mother said she wouldn't pay for it.

As for the fares:
 Prestatyn to Rhyl £2.20!
It takes five minutes in the car as it is only 2 miles.
Cost on the bus is £3.50 and takes 30 minutes.

I know you wanted to get it as a surprise but I 'm sure she will be equally surprised that you are offering to pay for it and will only be too happy to toddle along to a main station with her berf certificate and complete the necessaries

Didn't they use to accept letters from schools / collleges as confirmation ?

Just a standard letter stamped by school secretary - simples. Is that not an option any longer ?

Apparently not.

THW will not want to go to the station as she is a firm believer in "On-line" = Good. Anything else is Soooooooooooooooooooooo last century.

My fear is that if I start this hare running she will also be demanding a passport and I would remind you that my household income is a lot less than yours.

My mobile (PAYG) is with ASDA. The actual service is provided by Vodaphone but the phone and Sim came from ASDA. This is because ASDA are the cheapest at 8P a minute for calls, 4p a text and 20p per MB Data. My spend on mobile use is about £5 a month so no contract deal comes anywhere near it for my purposes.
THW refuses to have her phone on the same deal because "people will laugh at me for being cheap".
How will anyone know? ~ Calls from me do not show up as being from ASDA so why will hers?  Banghead

Everything I do or offer the Brat is scoffed at .....and I am often called "budget" as in
" Mum you are just soooooooooooooooooo budget "

Apparently this is cussing me for not want to spend pounds on stuff because it was designed by such and such , sold in a particular shop or is the latest model etc  sleep017

Riiiiiight!
Her latest is to complain the the special vegetarian foods that we are buying her are all "Cheap junk". I have, with the help of the food shopping receipts, proved that proportionally we spend more feeding her than any other member of the household.
She says I am fiddling the figures.
