Peace Brothers
If Growler is looking for an 'ill that is walk-up-able, not as steep as his favourite but lonely (if he can tolerate the sheep and the birds) try this route.
Go to Denbigh, take the road for Henllan (you'll find it signed from the roundabout at the Hand pub which is at the bottom of the hill at the end of the High Street). Follow the road past the Golf Course and through Henllan and you'll be on the B5382. Stay with the B5382 (there may be signs for Llansannan) a few miles along this road (you'll pass through a couple of hamlets) you will see, on your left a large hill (moorland would be a good description as it is famed as one of the finest heather moorlands in North Wales). There is a small road to the right that seems to lead to a farm. It has no name. You can't miss because you will have been running parallel to the hill and be almost past it. The little road has no name. It runs past the farm and is gated after the first half mile or so where it forks. Take the left fork and you'll be running up the side of the hill. There are a number of parking places on your right. To your left you will see a couple of deserted and broken down cottages/barns and the hill drops quite steeply away on that side (which is private land) Park up in one of the bays on the right and wander up the hill, there are some obvious paths to follow. Lots of gorse and heather. The place is teeming with rabbits. Quite a few Buzzards and Kites can usually be spotted. Sheep are grazed on the hillside. The pathways intertwine and cross one another so keep an eye on your bearings. We have never seen anyone up there other than one or two serious walkers. You can wander up there to your heart's content and never see a soul.
When you get back to your car either drive on and you will find yourself in Llanrwst or turn and go back to the B5382 and turn right to Llansannan where you will find two excellent pubs that offer good beer and /or excellent lunches (we have eaten in both) Good public car park and bogs in the village centre too! An interesting statue of a little girl is to be found in the village centre .
The village memorial to local notables Tudur Aled, William Salesbury, Henry Rees, Gwilym Hiraethog and Iorwerth Glan Aled who were local poets and artists. I find the statue compelling.
Better of the pubs is:
Do try it out some time it is a lovely place. If you use the pub shown watch your head! It has some very low beams. The bars are on two levels. In one you are looking down at the staff and feel like a giant, in the other you are looking up at the same people. The steps in between are .....errrrr ....interesting. Take care.
Edit to add PS ..... I may have mentioned this place before, a couple of years ago. If so ~ Sorry.
