Windows 32 and a rootkit
« on: November 01, 2010, 08:46:34 AM »
Avast has just stopped, blocked and deleted something to do with a potentially  malicious thing that was trying to get into this 'thing', as per thread title.

Seem to remember having this same problem about 4 years ago before I had Avast, and it got in here and caused mayhem.

What's that all about then ey? Shrugs:

A rootkit is a nasty piece of work. If one gets in, you can say goodbye to all your security measures and expect total meltdown over a period of time.

Yea.
IIRC I ended up getting the blue screen 'of death' last time.

Is it like some sort of virus or trojan or summat, and where does it come from? rubschin:

Avast has murdered this one anyway. cloud9:

It's not directly a trojan or virus, but works by getting into the system and then inviting all sorts of other nasties to join in. They could be virus, trojan or botnet types.
Eventually so many are allowed in that your system cannot function = rebuild required.
They can be removed but the last one I sorted out for somebody, involved 6 scans at 3-4 hours a pop, and I had to use 3 different types of of AV software, plus some specific removal s/ware.

Hard work.
