Sign of the times
« on: December 22, 2010, 12:11:58 PM »
Work has been quite tight this year and the contract for Scotland was terminated earlier in the week (the Scots have kept very quiet about their 12% education cuts). I called one of my colleagues on the Scottish job to commiserate. SHe is an ex university lecturer, very capable with numerous publications. She tells me that she now has no choice but to declare herself bankrupt.  eeek:

Not good but she has clearly either overreacted or over-spent.

Income 20 shillings, expenditure 19 shillings and sixpence, result happiness etc.  angel1

Bankruptcy is always an option but surely a qualified and experienced lecturer can find employment somewhere ... even if it means moving, which she will surely have to do if she declares bankruptcy.

That is sad, but  bit of an over reaction. The public trough is ging to be a lot shallower for some time.

I know I have said this before but the answer is Multiple Income Streams.

SWWLTBO works P/T for two separate colleges and does some mentoring of student teachers for a university. She also accepts private students who need cramming for A levels and Uni undergrads who are struggling in their first year with the transition from being taught (in schools) and learning (which is what you do at uni). The mentoring doesn't pay but it keeps her on the university's books and they "pay in kind" by only charging her half fees for the MA she is currently doing with them. Once she has completed the MA (in July) she hopes to gain a lectureship somewhere in Ingerlund and we will move out of Wales. Anywhere to get away from the increasing pressure to teach/lecture in dual language.

Nottinghamshire is under consideration as a possible relocation area. Lots of Unis in commuting distance, central for Family (not too close but not too far), the natives speak English (of a sort) and property prices aren't as high as further south.

What could possibly etc?

Oh Yus ~ It will happen.  happy088

Elder daughter's hospital stay has been postponed until sometime in the New Year hence she has been back at work, leaving me no available slot in which to visit (Weekends are reserved for her mother and I don't much want to run across her!) but once she has had the op she is likely to be off for about 6 to 8 weeks, two weeks in bed then "light duties" only. That is when I will get the chance of going down to see her, via Nottingham ~ in one direction or another.
