You called M'Lady?

BiL had back problems for years ... he had that op on it three years ago. Couldn't drive for several months after.

His back problems persist to this day

For what it's worth he is about your age, like you tall and, dare I mention, could also do with losing a few pounds around the middle.

His op was done on BUPA.

[serious] LL was told (after numerous MRI scans and stuff) that she had to have an (€15,000) operation to fuse her thingy wotsits... She could barely walk at the time and she doesn't carry the extra weight or ginger gene like wot Nick does. Anyhoo... a second opinion was sought who said that an op was the last thing she wanted and it wouldn't solve the issue.

Steroids were prescribed and she is now as right as rain.

I do feel that these 'specialists' often can't look outside of their own field of expertise. The neurosurgeon guy simply wouldn't consider that there was an alternative option to opening her up.

My advice - get second or third opinions before committing to surgery on your spine that could leave your crippled for life.

Wot he said ^^^^  Second opinion at the very least before you make a decision.  Also ask about pain management and persevere trying different drug regimes.

Do not consider fusing vertebrae unless you are already unable to walk. That way, the worst outcome is 'no change'.

My brother has had it done as he too had a knackered disc. Prior to the op he was off work for about six months and was in a terrible state - crawling from room to room. Op went fine and he's good as new now, but it still occasionally gives him gyp if he tries to lift something too heavy.
