Army ends support operation in NI
« on: August 01, 2007, 06:32:26 AM »
Quote from: BBC Web Site
The British army's operation in Northern Ireland came to an end at midnight on Tuesday after 38 years.
Operation Banner - the Army's support role for the police - had been its longest continuous campaign, with more than 300,000 personnel taking part.

Did anybody hear the army guy on the radio yesterday ? I don?t think it was widely reported as I only heard it the once.

In the early editions of the news (we get mixed BBC and BFBS news here) he was talking about the army?s contribution to the peace process and how they ?made a circle? that allowed the politicians to negotiate.

However, in just one bulletin I heard him say how sickening it was that the likes of Martin McGuiness, Ian Paisley et al can sit down together now after spending the last 38 years shouting and screaming at each other while the killing went on.

Priceless.

I'm surprised that such an historical event as this is having very little coverage. People seem more interested in basking sharks

Radio Four were on about it yesterday and again today.
The point is that this is neither the end of the problem nor even the beginning of the end. One Company of my Grandfather's Regiment were sent to Belfast to quell troubles with the natives in 1915/16 ~ whilst the rest of the Regiment were on the Somme. (Grandfather got the Somme). Ireland has been a problem to Britain since at least the days of Charles 1st and will continue to be so until we give the whole bloody place to someone else.
And again what is and always has been the root cause ~ religion!
I used to have a handle on life but it broke.
