I have a huge folder of family tree research type stuff here that my mum and stepdad were compiling before they both died. To be honest I haven't been able to face looking at it yet.

Perhaps it's time to have a gander .

Oh gawd what have I started?  scared2:

Top Tip;
There really is truth in what they say. You have to start with yourself and work back with what you know ~ then start investigating.

You'll be amazed at how many relatives you have than you never knew about and how many of them will be also seeking the family history. They will all want to swap information because we are all originals and therefore no two trees can be the same.

Wow!

Once you get back to 1066 it all becomes easier ..... The Normans kept good records of their knights etc and can trace them back to the original Norsemen. I have got back now to 595 and a "King" of Norway.

Minor now wants to board a ferry and go to claim his throne!!  lol:

OK I admit I have had to jump from male to female line a few times .... but marriages back then were a matter of acquisition ~ either of lands or influence. I can now trace and prove a line that leads from a King of Norway born in 595 through to an agricultural labourer in Odiham born in 1860 (My mother's grandfather).

The family, on both sides, has displayed some nifty footwork changing sides twice during the Wars of the Roses, again under Henry VIII and again under Cromwell but somewhere they lost the lands and the money.  confused:

The most amazing thing, to me at least, is that since 1066 not a single one was born north of the M4 .... which I find most pleasing.  ;D
