Calling All Maths Experts
« on: November 02, 2011, 11:07:13 AM »
There is, today, a lengthy article on the BBC website about ATM's ('Oles in the wall to some).
You may care to read it at http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-12668840

However to save you the trouble it is about ATM's and the fact that they usually only dispense £10 and £20 notes. The article goes on to quote Bank of England sources bemoaning the lack of machines that dispense fivers (now our smallest form of paper money) and also explains that this is why the fivers we get in our change are usually rancid, crumpled and torn.

All well and good so far but they then give the following statistic
Quote
the average withdrawal from a bank or building society's cash machine is £67 - which would soon drain an ATM if it only dispensed £5 notes.

Now I admit that maths was not my strongest subject at school but if the machines will only dispense £20's, £10's and sometimes £5's how the fvck do they come up with an average withdrawal of £67? Surely it has to end either in 0 or 5.
I used to have a handle on life but it broke.

The clue is in the word 'average'.  Take 3 cash machines, someone take £20 out of the first, £60 out of the second, then £90 out of the third.
A total of £170 out of 3 machines. That means an average of £56.67 out of each (rounded up).  Quite impossible as you say  razz:

And curiously this comes on the day the 'new' 50 squid note appears...

How long before those start appearing in the holes in the wall?    rubschin:

rubschin: And do these clever calculations, which whilst pedantic make little sense to the reader of the report, include those machines that charge for their use and withdraw £1.85 from your account for the privilege of taking your own money out of the bank?

Give me 20 and 10's anyday . They can get rid of the £5 note too ...with 1 and 2 pound coins they are almost redundant anyway  noooo:

Fifties are the way forward. Before too long inflation will soar and fifties will be the new fivers.

We need "Nifty Fifties" - the construction industry (scaffolders especially) rely on them.
