Question for Tipsy
« on: February 08, 2012, 08:11:26 AM »
As our resident lettuce expert perhaps Tipsy can offer some words of wisdom.

Why can I not buy varieties of lettuce unless I buy a bag of mixed leaf?

Bags of mixed leaf, once opened, go soggy within a day or so. There is too much in a bag to eat in 24 hours unless you are a family of rabbits but only occasionally do I see a whole lettuce of any variety other than Iceberg (which I hate)

Yet when I was a kid Me Dad (and his Dad too) used to grow several varieties. Once cut at the stalk Mum would place them in a bowl of water with a little piece of coal and they stayed fresh for a week. Now I have to buy a bag of mixed leaf and within a few hours of opening the leaves are all slimy and have to be thrown away.

I reckon that we throw away over half of each bag. Good for the supermarkets no doubt but not good for the household budget.  cussing:

That anorak doesn't look like there is much Lycra in it, and where did you park your bike?
