Hello,

A staff member has replied to your question:

Hi,

It appears today one of our customers has been rather abusing the database server. this has slowed things down not only for yourself but a few other customers. Please accept our apologies for the repeated disruption to your site. Due to the nature of shared hosting it's possible that this sort of thing can happen from time to time.

The only way to prevent this is to try and designate dedicated resources to the site. This isn't possible on shared hosting by it's very nature and as such virtual or dedicated hosting is the next step up. Our virtual servers start at a competitive rate that is comparable to what you are paying for this shared hosting currently, however require someone that has technical expertise to see to their day to day running.

To obtain and analyze the logs you seek would take a lot of time and isn't something that's necessary at this point.

Kind Regards,

So basically we're all working on a party line and you are too mean to go private?  rubschin:

I sent them this reply first thing...

This is one of your standard answers - I know this because I have seen it before....

So you are now agreeing that it is not our increased bandwidth that is causing the problem but somebody else abusing theirs?

Yet WE have to be punished by spending more money with you???

As I pointed out to John Coyne yesterday, we already spend £80 per year for hosting plus another £39.36 for the SQL database plus another £14.27 for extra mySQL storage and something else for a backup fee...

When we signed up with you it wasn't made clear that to actually USE the site we would have to upgrade to a dedicated server!

So no, either sort out the client that IS abusing your services and return our performance to the (acceptable) levels of a few weeks ago or arrange to refund our payments from the end of March - I'll move the site elsewhere.

Thanks in advance.

No response yet tho....  noooo:

Hello,

A staff member has replied to your question:

Hi,
we are dealing with the individual that was abusing the system, however as my colleague states this could re-occur with another customer and due to the nature of the shared hosting we cannot prevent it until after it has happened, he was merely offering you a solution which gives you full control with similar costing to what you are currently paying (£120+vat for a linux vServer).

Mong - their cheapest dedicated 'Budget Server' is £368 per year....  ::)

[serious]
Just a thought from the layman, couldn't these 40-400 users be the Amazon advert thingys that keep changing what's on offer at the bottom of the page?

If they keep reading all the posts to see what is being talked about and match up the adverts to the posts, wouldn't that overload it in the same way?[/serious]

A good point well made!

I guess it could be an issue but we've been running the Amazong thing for some time now...

The reasons they've given so far for the problems are: -

1) Site maintenance that they were carrying out
2) Too many users
3) Another user on our shared server who is using too much bandwidth.

I personally think that is all bollox - standard replies to get rid of me (no chance   eveilgrin:) or get us to upgrade to a faster (and more expensive) dedicated server...

I'll switch the ads off and see if it makes a noticeable difference tho....

Probably fibs as you say, but when the Amazoon thing first went on, I'm sure it didn't show a different set of offers every time you open a page like it does now.

Amazong ads gone and it is no betterer here...  noooo:

I think the 400 users they refer to is from the day that 'Virtual Pub' was mentioned on the tellybox and we had hundreds of guests.... it was faster then than it is today...  noooo:

Hello,

A staff member has replied to your question:

Hi
My colleagues are dealing with the customer which is causing the issues.  It isn't a case that you and other customers affected are being punished by having to purchase a more expensive service, my colleague was simply advising a system which is more robust.

I would advise assessing the performance of the site once we have dealt with the individual who is causing the problems, if you still feel that cancelling the service is the best is course action we can carry that out.

Thanks.
