Strange virus infection?
« on: May 11, 2012, 07:50:58 AM »
Summat has got into my pooter. Random words in e mails and websites, including this one, get highlighted and seem to be hyperlinks to ads, mainly for I phones. AVG doesn't do anything. Any suggestions?

AVG Freeware is good but not that good ..... try upgrading to the "Paid for" version.

Take the pooter to an expert and have them "clean it" ..... It'll cost more than upgrading AVG.

I run AVG "Free" and also "Spybot" (it too is freeware) on the principle that what one doesn't get the other might.

Spybot asks every time anything tries to "change" my pooter .... which can be bloody annoying when it asks 15 times during a regular update session but has prevented several unauthorised attempts to change things.

THW has an iPhone and a Mac Book. She is forever going up to the Apple Store in Regents Street to get them fixed. So far they haven't charged her anything as all her problems have been "Known" but last visit they told her that she needs to upgrade and offered her £200 in part ex for her Mac Book if she spent £900 on a new one. Included in the "deal" was an offer to transfer all her data "Free of Charge".  ::)

Try Malwarebytes - it is very good and free

Used it last night on a suspect drive.

Try a "restore" to before the problem started. It may be that your settings have changed in some way and a restore should cure it if that is the problem.

OK.

Try different browser and email client to see if it still happens.

You could also try StopZilla to see if that finds a problem.

If Malwarebytes and StopZilla don't find anything then there is probably no infection (AVG has no finds)
