Easyspace - Debit card Warning
« on: August 16, 2012, 12:13:13 PM »
Once again I am in dispute with the former host of the virtual pub!  cussing:

But I have discovered something which I think is quite astonishing...   eeek:

When I started using Easyspace as an ISP I obviously had to use a credit card to pay for my purchases. I actually choose to use a debit card.

They kept the card details on-line so that if I wanted to purchase anything else or upgrade the pub, etc, I simply clicked 'Buy' and they took the money off the debit card.

Last November, which changing bank accounts around and generally doing some housework, the debit card was cancelled and a new card with a new number issued.

At the end of July the card (if it had still existed which it doesn't) expired.

Easyspace wrote to me (by e-mail) at the end of June and mid July informing me that my card would expire soon and I would be unable to renew my services if I didn't add a new card.

Yesterday they took £73 off the card for a service I no longer require.

I wrote to complain stating that the card had expired and I had formally (in writing) cancelled the service they were trying to charge me for.

Their response was essentially 'bollocks'. In fact, I'll quote: -

Quote from: easyspace
Even though your card had expired , if it is till linked to the same bank account , we still receive payment . As our agreement was to take the funds from that account , not from that card .

I was amazed!  Shocked:

I called the bank (Barclays) but they say there is nothing they can do. Apparently, it is quite 'normal' and they can keep taking money from the account until you formally tell the bank that you do not want them to any longer.

Be warned!

Beware BM - this is a common practice (and the reality is - these payments can be extremely difficult to put an end to)

Money Saving Expert explains it all.

"Political Correctness is a doctrine fostered by a delusional, illogical minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end."

Well, someone had to say it!

I realise that now!  cussing:

The thing is, I didn't realise I was setting up a 'recurring payment' when I placed the order... Any more than you would think you were setting up a 'recurring payment' when you give Amazon your CC number - or any other on-line purchase.

the fact that they allow such payments referencing an obsolete, expired card is bizarre....  noooo:

Having, I hope, assisted in the resolution of this matter, I will, for a change, take a Finger with a Talisker chaser dear chap!

[serious mode]  Recurring charges like that on the click of a mouse are verging on the criminal IMHO. Direct debits or standing orders from your bank require paperwork, signatures and agreements and that should be that. I was done once on a recurring charge that was far from clear and in the smallest font size  ::). Should be illegal!  evil:

Agreed!  Thumbs:

It is outrageous that the fecking bank allow it when the card hasn't even existed since bloody November....

Imagine going into a shop or trying to buy something on-line with a non-existent expired card.... bastards at Barclays would make you jump through that 'additional verification' loop then refuse the payment - no arguments.

Yet somebody you once bought something from years earlier can continue to leach from your account....  noooo:

Dear Barman

Please be advised the refund has failed due to an out of date payment method on the account. I do apologise for the inconvenience this may cause. I will require an indate payment method to be added to the account to re-process the refund. Please provide a contact number and convenient time to call or alternatively please call 0370 755 XXX (UK) and provide a new payment method for us to process the refund to.

Kind regards,

So Barclays allow them to take money out of the account on an obsolete debit card but not pay back into it????  Banghead

Cancel the lock in.....  noooo:

Tell the feckers that a Bankers Draft in your name is now the only method acceptable!

Oh and I agree with the others ~ I suspect that many of us have been caught this way. That said I have such a method of payment with both Amazon and ASDA On-Line shopping and they are both meticulous about the dates on cards. Laithwaites Wine Club however was quite another matter!

I now bank on-line and do a monthly check on all regular payments made from the account and any that are "periodic" are cancelled.
