When walking by the canal (or falling into it) use an anti midge spray containing a Citronella oil.

At about this time of year there are some small biting beetle things around, they have a black and white diamond pattern on their backs.  They seem strangely attracted to me. When I get bitten the bite never fails to turn into a sodding great hole that lasts for weeks.  I have one on my right ankle at the moment hole is about 1cm across and  1/2 cm deep.  evil:
