Lager sales are falling as drinkers choose more sophisticated options, according to market researchers Mintel.
UK lager sales have fallen by 5% since 2005, according to Mintel, and the firm predicts that they will fall by another 8% by 2012.

I heard this on the radio this morning.

What it doesn?t mention in the article is what the more sophisticated drinks are?

On the radio it said that lager drinkers are changing to more sophisticated drinks ?like cider and rose wine?.  point:

If they have remained firmly closed until now then no, you are not a drunk.  noooo:

I still don?t think cider and rose can be classed as ?sophisticated? tho?  whistle:

It has more to do with people's reluctance to drink in pubs etc because of:
(i) Drink Drive Laws (no complaints about those)
(ii) Fewer and fewer pubs that actually are not over run with children
(iii) Fewer and fewer pubs over all
PLUS
Lager out of a bottle from the offy is no substitute for several pints in a good pub but as more people chose to drink at home then they will naturally gravitate toward "sophisticated" drinks such as wine, spirits etc. Perhaps we will even see the return of the Cocktail Hour.
What is for sure there are fewer pubs now than for many years and with the anti-smoking legislation now biting hard there will be even fewer next year.

Well, 'white lightning' is barely drinkable I must admit (despite several attempts).

However, as a long term cider boozer there are some great choices out there if you are prepared to look around and pay a bit more.

Mind you, this latest fashion of pouring cider over ice is an abomination before god and man and all practitioners of this idiocy should be thrown into the scorpion pit.

The pit is already filled with people I have thrown in for doing the same, or using mixers with, good malt whisky.  evil:

The only things that should ever added to a good malt are a log fire and another measure of malt

As for where does Perry stand ~ Normally in front of Como or Mason.

I tried some of that swedish perry they sell in Wetherspoons the other day. Very sweet.

The wife liked it.  eeek:

I will have close look at the cider available at the farmers market tomorrow. Haven't drunk any for a while.

Steer clear of that organic stuff Tel, it dissolves your teeth.

It's better than the scrumpy what dissolves the table!

That's the "why don't my legs work anymore stuff". Watched a mate of mine crawl on his hands and knees up a hill after a few pints of that.
