« on: September 29, 2012, 08:28:00 AM »
Bit last minute this, but the Mini Moose is a bit worried that her grub 'n' stuff is going to get nicked from the communal fridge, so had this sudden and very last minute idea....but are they any good though? Never had or used one meself like.
The Argos have got one......  http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/2719629/c_1/1%7Ccategory_root%7CKitchen+and+laundry%7C14418476/c_2/2%7C14418476%7CFridges%7C28135119/c_3/3%7Ccat_28135119%7CMini+fridges%7C28135577.htm#pdpProductReviews

Absolutely pointless to be honest ...they hold a couple of tinnies and are not great for keeping food chilled adequately  noooo:

While most portable mini-fridges claim to have a temperature of 5.56 to 7.22 degrees Celsius, this temperature is still five to six degrees higher than a regular fridge, making them not as cold as they should be. Depending on the brand, a portable mini-fridge is designed to stay cold for six to eight hours. During that time the fridge will begin to warm up. The temperature change could lead to spoiled food and beverages. Mini-fridges are not good for long-term storage.

Well ok then you ex uni types, how d'ya stop yer goodies (choccy) getting nicked then, and don't say by putting labels with your name on said items? rubschin:

Been told that students don't class it as nicking, just 'borrowing' in times of urgent need due to lack of planning and dosh. whistle:

Communal fridge is going to be shared by 5 others apparently.

We had a communal fridge in halls . We had 2 fridges between 12 of us on our floor. There is a certain acceptance that things like milk , sugar , choccy etc will be consumed at times of need. Generally rolling in the early hours and having the munchies !!!

Lets be honest we still have the "who has used my milk" discussions at work even though the bottles are all initialed  noooo:

At uni we had a 'communal' biscuit tin where we took in turns to buy. This prevented some midnight feast raids .

Generally you will not be able to bulk buy food as there simply will not be enough storage space .  Main meals won't be touched , so it's just about reducing the risk really.  Lets face it - anyone who buys chocolate and intends not to eat it for days is seriously asking for trouble  lol:

Must admit that when I go to some of me cussies garages rest rooms, there'll quite often be a box of biccies or tin of choccies lying around, and I ALWAYS 'elp meself like. whistle:

It's not nicking is it? It's called uncontollable grub lust.

If she is in halls then her grub will get "borrowed"

Most unis do not allow mini fridges etc in rooms as they are not PAT tested and they also like to control the leccy use. Pooter and printer + Hairdryer was all the THW was permitted ~ AND THEY CHECK WEEKLY! Any unauthorised equipment they find is removed immediately.

Oh and keep in mind that all your shouting will do no good ~ She is an adult now and the Uni will simply refuse to talk to you about it. They will only talk to her and they will have provided her with a list of things that are and are not permitted in Halls ~ Fridges being just about top of the list of MUST NOT if I remember the list the THW got from Lancaster.

And that is the first sensible  answer you've had.

Frankly she'll just have to get used to it ~ She is not at home now ~ this is communal living!

PS to my previous.

Eldest daughter has delivered her daughter to uni in the past week. She too took a mini fridge and was told in no uncertain terms to take it home again. Daughter #1 is a stroppy cow at the best of times and was told if she didn't stop mouthing off she would be escorted from uni by security. "We deal with your daughter not you" was what she was told.
